Makeover in a crisis centre: a safe haven for families image 1
At a moment of crisis, when life takes an unexpected turn, a crisis centre becomes a safe haven for families in need. To make this temporary stop on the way to a new life more like a real home, IKEA Interior Designers have led a transformative makeover of the kitchen and living rooms in the crisis centre "Burtnieks". The redesign incorporated functional and stylish furniture, optimising space and creating a warm, welcoming atmosphere. Thoughtful touches like vibrant colours and cosy textiles brought a sense of comfort, enhancing the environment for families in need of support and refuge.

Kitchen before: large, but rather impractical

The large communal kitchen, though spacious, lacks cosiness and practicality for multiple cooks at once. The space requires a refreshing touch to enhance its functionality and warmth. By optimizing the workflow, adding warm lighting, cosy seating, and better organization, it could become a more welcoming and efficient area for communal cooking and gathering.

Kitchen after: comfortable cooking/dining for several people

After the makeover, the kitchen is more than just a place to cook and eat. It has become a comfortable, inviting space for multiple people to cook and dine together. Cosy seating and improved functionality create a welcoming atmosphere, encouraging everyone to spend time together. The interior designers shared: "We chose colours that are calming and create a sense of ease, integrating them with the functionality of Scandinavian design." A large worktop, ample storage, and a functional appliance wall promote comfortable cooking, while colourful textiles and accessories add a homely feeling.

Rooms before: austere and impersonal

The bedrooms at the crisis centre have the basics but would benefit from a refresh to add some homeliness. Simple touches like warm lighting, cosy textiles, and personal decor could transform these spaces, making them more welcoming and comfortable. Such enhancements could provide a sense of normalcy and comfort during difficult times.

Rooms after: modern cosiness with a Scandinavian touch

After an interior makeover, the bedrooms in the crisis centre have been transformed into practical spaces with a Scandinavian design touch. Light, warm wooden colours, combined with greys and yellows, add a personal, cosy touch. These minimalistic rooms now offer a safe haven for families, providing comfort and warmth at a moment of crisis.

Our most loyal volunteers

Meet the team of IKEA co-workers who volunteered in bringing this meaningful project to life. Together, we assembled furniture, ironed curtains, decorated rooms and did everything we could to turn the crisis centre into a cosy home.

We at IKEA stand for equality and fair treatment of people in all circumstances and situations, including the life at home. This is why we decided to become the voice in raising awareness and fighting against the domestic violence as one of the most pressing issues at homes in Baltics.
